i-Station N7tu navigation systemi-Station’s latest GPS / DMB / PMP conglomerate isn’t too terribly differentiated from its do-it-all siblings, but the stylish design, expansive seven-inch LCD, and built-in hard drive make it hard to shun. This navigation device includes integrated stereo speakers, a SiRF Star III receiver, DMB TV tuner, SD expansion slot, USB connectivity, rechargeable battery, and your choice of a 30GB or 60GB internal HDD. Of course, you’ll also find the usual photo viewer and media player functions within, and while pricing information seems to be absent, we Americans won’t be ponying up for this Korean-based gizmo anyway.

AMD TV Wonder

Regardless of whether you’re scouting a TV tuner for your desktop or portable machine, AMD has unveiled a duo of devices that will likely fit the bill. Up first is AMD’s plug ‘n play ATI TV Wonder 600 USB, which should have no problem tuning OTA HD on any machine equipped with USB, and also comes bundled with an IR remote, AV input, and Catalyst Media Center software. For the desktop only crowd, the ATI TV Wonder 650 Combo PCIe (pictured after the jump) sports ClearQAM support, hybrid analog / digital tuning, a 3D comb filter, FM tuner, and like its portable sibling, works just fine with Windows Vista. No word yet on the pricing details, but both units should be shipping out next month.

Google Acquires Postini for $625 Million

Technology, Search Engines No Comments »

PostiniLast week GrandCentral was Google’s latest new toy, this week it’s Postini. The Internet giant announced its $625 million acquisition Monday morning, which is of course still subject to closing agreements and is scheduled to conclude in the third quarter of 2007.

Unlike with GrandCentral’s acquisition, we won’t have to speculate about how Google will be integrating the company’s technology with its own. Postini’s claim to fame is on-demand communications security, which they already provide to 35,000 businesses and 10 million users worldwide. According to the press release, this security will be worked into Google Apps, including Gmail, Calendar, Talk, Docs & Spreadsheets, and the Personal Start Page.

“The response to Google Apps has been tremendous, with more than 1,000 small businesses signing up for the service every day. At the same time, large businesses have been reluctant to move to hosted applications due to issues of security and corporate compliance,”  said Google Enterprise’s vice president and general manager Dave Girouard, in a statement. “By adding Postini products to Google’s technology, businesses no longer have to choose — employees get the intuitive products they want, and the company achieves the security and assurance it needs.”

Playstation 3 Price Cuts Now Confirmed

Playstation 3 Price CutsJust days after Sony officials were publicly denying news of an impending $100 price cut on the Playstation 3, the company has announced that there will, in fact, be a $100 price cut on the Playstation 3. In a press release Monday morning, Sony announced both the slashed $499 price of its 60GB PS3, and the introduction of an 80GB model packaged with Motorstorm, which will take over for the previous model and retail at $599.

Besides reneging previous statements, Sony’s press release also renewed the company’s promise of new games in the chute. With only around 60 titles available for a system that’s quickly going on one year old, Sony has promised an additional 120 first- and third-party games by the end of the fiscal year and through Christmas, including: NBA ‘08, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation, Devil May Cry IV, Dynasty Warriors: GUNDAM, Grand Theft Auto IV, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Hellboy, Metal Gear Solid 4 Guns of the Patriots, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, SEGA Rally Revo, Stranglehold, The Darkness, TimeShift, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Vegas and Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2.

“As we move into the next phase of PS3, it’s important that we continue to evaluate our product line, offering consumers the technology and features that meet their growing needs for new forms of media and the way in which it is delivered,” said Jack Tretton, president and CEO of SCEA, in a statement. “The introduction of the 80GB PS3, the new pricing for the current 60GB model, the availability of more than 100 new software titles this fiscal year and, finally, the expansion of services for Playstation Network, will provide even more options for users and will help bring new consumers into the PS3 fold.”

17% Of Men Have A Female Brain

Technology No Comments »

BrainScientists from the prestigious University of Cambridge claim that there are such things as ‘male’ brains and ‘female’ brains.  However the really shocking news is that just because you are male you don’t necessarily possess a ‘male brain’. In fact 17% of men are equipped with a female brain.

‘Brain Sex’

If you’re a man, you may be more in touch with your feminine side than you ever guessed, and if you’re a woman you may occasionally think more like the lads.

That’s the surprising news from scientists who think there are ‘male brains’ and ‘female brains’. Study findings show that although men tend to have male brains and women tend to have female brains, it isn’t always so.

Most scientists think there’s no real difference between men and women when it comes to total intelligence (commonly called IQ), but there is growing evidence that men and women’s brains are wired differently. This theory may explain the finding that, on average, men are at better at some things and women are better at others.

For example, studies have found that women tend to be better at empathising and men are generally better at systemising.  In other words, men are often more adept at discovering the rules that govern a system. They like to get deeply involved in activities such as car repair, computing or building up an extensive music collection.

Women, on the other hand, are thought to be better at guessing other people’s emotions and responding appropriately. They would be more likely to comfort you in a time of crisis.

But men and women don’t always fit neatly into their respective groups. A University of Cambridge study found that 17% of men have a ‘female’ empathising brain and 17% of women have a ‘male’ systemising brain.

Have Spammers Overcome the CAPTCHA?

Technology No Comments »

It appears that spammers have found a way to automatically create Hotmail and Yahoo email accounts. They have already generated more than 15,000 bogus Hotmail accounts, according to security company BitDefender. The company says that a new threat, dubbed Trojan.Spammer.HotLan.A, is using automatically generated Yahoo and Hotmail accounts to send out spam email, which suggests that spammers have found a way to overcome Microsoft’s and Yahoo’s CAPTCHA systems.

Developments for the iPhone

Technology No Comments »

The cool thing with Apple is that they give advance notice of a big product before they release it, and then the product is launched with a stack of new apps for it all ready to go. You could almost feel the industry hold its breath all last week, and to see it all come out must feel like a relief for a lot of the IT world. A chop-suey of stuff they’ve built for it:

Before we do anything else, see Apple’s own web development guide for the iPhone. You can pretty much take any Web 2.0 app and shuttle it between the iPhone and PCs with ease. It recommends you use Safari to test for compatibility from the PC, since that’s the common bridge between the two. Now, for all those who were wondering why Apple was in such a hurry to port Safari to Windows a couple weeks back… does that answer your question?

Meebo, the multi-functional chat application, is ported to it. There were bugs in the system but they’re getting it worked out now.

Ta-Da List, the to-do list and information organizer application. They’ve optimized it for iPhone as well as the web, and do the screen-shots ever look suh-weet!

Read-Write web’s list of apps for iPhone - Amongst the apps listed are the Etelos CRM suite of modularized CRM tools, Clippz.com’s video download service, Morfik’s new development platform for iPhone apps, and much more in the links.

Not to be outdone, GigaOM has its own list of iPhone candy. Some accessories here like headphones and carrying cases, along with web services.

Keep an eye out for this book, due this month: “The Missing iPhone Manual”. But you know what I’ll really be looking forward to seeing is O’Reilly to publish a “iPhone Hacks” book. O’Reilly Radar is already blogging about the iPhone, so you know it’s inevitable! Tech isn’t officially cool until it has a cookbook of cool wizard tricks.

The iPhone buzz has erupted so fast, it’s a struggle to keep up with it. You almost don’t dare sleep. If any readers out there have an iPhone, be sure to leave us a comment telling us all about it, and what you’ve discovered you can do with it!

Barigo Clock Weather Station

While I have never had a personal need for a Weather Station that consisted of seemingly floating disks - if I did have a need for such a device, this would be the one I’d want…why? Because it’s just so darn cool looking. I mean seriously, it looks like it came directly out of the future and decided to high on your desk.

The 4 inch Barigo Clock Weather Station will show you the time, temperature and humidity - and look damn cool while doing it. The device is available with either brass or nickeled brass dials and base, or you can choose a wooden base. It’ll run you $106.

iPhone hacked for shell access

iPhone Hacked for Shell Access

Well, that didn’t take long — the hacker crew of IRC channel #iPhone has managed to enable shell access to the iPhone just a week after its release. There’s not a lot to the hack — the iPhone’s 30-pin dock connector features the same pinouts as the iPod, so creating a serial connection simply involved connecting up a resistor, ground, and RS-232 level converter and running a few commands from iphoneinterface. The resulting shell is pretty basic, but features a TFTP client — meaning that we should see a flood of attempts to open the iPhone up in the coming weeks (as if we wouldn’t anyway).
